I Do DIY… finding a home in our home for wedding stuff

5 Sep

“What do you do with wedding stuff after the wedding?”

Of all the wedding related questions I’ve received
recently this (from Lorri) struck me as a striking one…

You spend so much time making things and then what?

For us, there’s a simple answer.

We had a wedding sign – a gorgeous, gorgeous thing
made by my super talented uncle – and there was no way
it wasn’t going to become a feature of our home.

So at the weekend, we hung up our sign in our kitchen.
The space totally seems like it was made for the sign.

It made me so happy to see while
eating my cereal this morning!

As for our other bits and bobs…

We also put back up our gin print.
(It was our ‘bar sign’ at our wedding.)

And hung up our new ‘bike’ print… a wedding
present from our best man and best lady.

Happily the two co-ordinate very well!

This is where our chalkboard sign currently resides…
I may have to think of a better place for it eventually
but I kind of like it here at the moment.

We also finally found a spot for our Hang It All
(a wedding present from very generous friends).
And somehow one of our stags seems to suit being here…
so he’s found a home too.

Elsewhere in the flat, we have jam jars with candles
and jam jars with leftover pinwheels. It makes
me smile to see them every day and glad
that we don’t have to put them ‘away’ just yet.

Happy Monday everyone xx

P.S. What’s your advice? What did you do
or are planning to do with your wedding diy?

P.P.S. I have no idea quite where to begin with
blogging about our wedding. I have a few DIYs
to share but if there’s anything you want to
know or ask, do let me know!

They all look fab in your home Zoe. That sign by your Uncle is sooo amazing, and I love where you have put it….also I have mega kitchen envy (and tray). Lovely.
Well, our wedding was almost 4 years ago now, and we had almost an Ikea’s worth of glass vases, tea light holders and galvanised steel pots in our garage. Very few made it into our home as we just didn’t have the space. Most were given away when we cleared everything out for our move. Oh well…

I think it all looks lovely in its new places! I especially like your sign in the kitchen- it looks so nice and clean & fresh!

I love the chalkboard especially. What a lovely memento!

Great post, great house! I’ve already started putting some wedding bits out into our house and then the week before the wedding I guess we will gather it all and box it all up. We’ve only bought things we want to see in the house again whihc proves difficult in places and so pretty soon our kitchen will probably have pots and pans sitting on cake stands 🙂

I love how it all fits with your home. It is really lovely. There are a few things I want for our wedding that I want to keep after but our home is so tiny I have no idea where! Love the way you have done it though. Your home is really lovely.

Oh Zoe your flat is so pretty.

Lovely 🙂 Badgers on wallpaper! Random question I know, but what colour did you paint your kitchen? Looking for the right kind of white for ours and yours looks perfect.

Gosh they all look so amazing. You have obviously great taste in decor and so do your friends too! Love that print they gave you. And yes, I too have kitchen envy and wall paper envy and also everything else! Keep the wedding posts coming… I love it. Lou xxx

I made little mini top hats filled with lollipop roses, and gathered dozens of vintage china teacups and saucers which I filled with tea lights. We also had stacks of old books on our tables. I had plans to re-use the hats as inspiration in my new sewing studio but they all got taken home by guests as souvenirs, as did the books. I’m going to make use of my teacup candles though, we just moved house and have now got 3 Georgian fireplaces in our new place so I think a scattered placement of teacups and photoframes (bought to hold our table name signs) will look good.

The sign looks amazing up there! (it goes without saying the rest of your flat looks beautiful)

How is your flat so cool!? I am tremendously jealous and hope that one day I can make a flat look as beautiful as you have! The sign looks gorgeous in the kitchen, and I love the floor you have in there. So pretty.

    Thanks everyone 🙂

@caroline – yeah, we have one too many cake stands now. we had 8 pre wedding and then I decided that we needed more!

@anna and the ring – think it might be a one-time deal I’m afraid… though I totally think he should make this sort of thing for others.

@lovelypigeon – god no, it wasn’t even that tidy when I took these shots! just that stuff is all behind me!

@fotomomo – it’s blackened by farrow & ball (well, sort of, it’s a trade paint rip-off for much cheaper… but, shhh, no-one can tell!)

@mel – I love the idea of teacups scattered on the mantlepieces! might have to try that one day 🙂

@Jayne Mortimer – nope, you can get it from http://atwopipeproblem.com/

@catherinesprunt – it’s from harvey marina (I think that’s what it’s called). looks fab but a total pain to clean if I’m honest!!

It all looks so very at home. 🙂

  19. kate bremner (@wee_ktb) 12/09/2011 at 7:44 PM #

It all looks lovely 🙂 We’ve started lending out our stuff – bunting has now been used 3 times and our signs have been passed on. 🙂 I’m feeling the pass it on vibe! x

Just discovered your blog and am now a blurker (love that btw!). We totally crafted our wedding so have so many random things floating about the place including our cake topper that has become a kinda ornament on top of the bookcase, our wedding tree hanging in the hallway, a million cake stands on our “dresser”, flower garlands ready to be hung in the nursery, metal initials above our bed and our favourite wedding notelets stuck to the wall. All your stuff looks damn cool though. That sign..insanely cool.

After the wedding, I turned my crafting into my own little Etsy business. And made about a million cushions for our new house. You can never have too many cushions, right? xx

@wee_ktb – love that your bunting has been used 3 times already 🙂

@Nell – loving that you’re a blurker! 😉 you can never have enough cushions I say… and I love how your wedding stuff has just become decor/future life stuff 🙂

Hey Zoe! You have the cutest blog! I have a feeling I might be procrastinating on your blog next week when I’m on study leave instead of actually studying! Lol… I love the sign that your Uncle made and how you’ve done up your apartment. We’ve been meaning to put things up around our apartment from our wedding but we’re taking a VERY long time!! 🙂

Leave a little love...
