Introducing… Blook Club

6 Sep

Every year, I write a ‘to do’ list instead of resolutions.

For the past 2 years, my list has included ‘join a book club’.

(I adore books. Not just for colour coding you see!)

And for 1 and half years, I’ve not really managed that.

*****

While working one night, I started moaning about
my lack of book reading to my husband.
He said, as I think he always says now,
why don’t you ask twitter if they know of one.

So, I did. More specifically, I asked Kirsty
if she knew of one. And then somehow our
conversation ended up with me organising
a book club, as opposed to joining one!

I called it ‘Blook Club’.
Bloggers plus books.
And then I made a little logo
(despite the fact I’m not a designer).
So it’s sort of all official now.

Ta-da.

We’re holding the first one in Edinburgh this weekend,
but if you fancy coming to future Blook Clubs
(or even to this weekend’s), just drop me a line.

I’m kind of excited (and a bit nervous)
to meet everyone, start reading more again
and then babble about it at length…

God help the poor souls
who have signed up already!

*****

P.S. Any suggestions of books gratefully received.
For the first one, we’re reading How to be a Woman.
I thought it would give us plenty to chat about!

Hooray for blook club! After getting most of the way through our first book I fear that I might have to get a little tipsy before I discuss porn & my political opinions on body hair with people I’ve never met before, but happily I am a light weight. Bring in on I say.

Can you tell I hadn’t read it when I suggested it? 😉 Yeah a little drink is a good idea I think!

Ha ha glad I’m not the only one feeling slightly concerned at the potential discussion topics! Although I am still laughing in my head at the thought of wearing a Greggs paper bag with two leg holes ripped out of it instead of pants. I can tell already this is going to be a very highbrow book club. I mean Blook Club.

    Can’t wait!

    Oh jealous! Sounds great.

Ooh, I’ll come along to the next one (as long as it’s not in December as I don’t think I’ll be going very far then!)! I’ve been meaning to join a book club for two years now, so the time has come to stop procrastinating! Just let me know in advance what the book is!

Book clubs rock! I got press-ganged into going to two recently and wasn’t expecting them to be so much fun. We read “How To Be A Woman” last month and had a wonderful discussion – started off talking about pornography and the objectification of women, then somehow ending up debating David Cameron’s hairstyle. Think you’ll love it! Would love to come to the next one so will drop you a line.

Gutted to be missing the first one! And not to meet everyone. Please keep me on the distribution list for the next meet. Will have a think about potential books.

Love the logo – and you say you’re not a designer.

Oooh I would really like to come to the next one. Am I still allowed even though I don’t have a blog? I could start one if I’m allowed to join the club.

I used to go to a book club but we met in a library not a licenced premises, and it was mostly older ladies. But it was good fun and made me read new books that I wouldn’t necessarliy pick up.
Looking forward to Blook Club though, I’ll be the one in the purple tights!

Ooh would love to be part of this! Unfortunately I haven’t read the book and don’t think I’ll have time before this weekend … but definitely keep me in the loop for the next one! At this rate you’ll have to set up multiple blook clubs because so many of us want to come along!

Aww, thanks so much everyone! Had quite a few requests to do an online version (and even a blog button) so I’ve got my thinking cap on and hopefully will have something to share soon 🙂

This is such a wonderful idea! I think it’s great that you are fulfilling this goal by starting your own. So admirable!

Wow what a great idea, and the logo is just lovely! If only I lived another 300 or so miles north so I could join in. Enjoy your first event! 🙂 xx

Love the first choice of book. I can’t imagine how much fun you guys are going to have discussing it. Actually find myself feeling a touch sad I’m not up in the cold, grim north this weekend to join you guys. I might follow along, if I may.

  25. Lexi 09/09/2011 at 12:48 PM #

  26. Jo Yates 10/09/2011 at 8:13 PM #
